Islam: He accepted Islam between the first and second pledge of Aqabah
As a result of him accepting Islam, Banu Abdil Ash-hal (his tribe) accepted Islam. They were the first tribe to accept Islam from the Ansar. Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) gave him the title of Sayyidul Ansar.
He participated in Badr and Uhud and remained close to Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) on that occasion. He was struck by an arrow in a vein in the battle of Khandaq which caused him a severe injury. The blood flowed from this wound continuously until he passed away after a month.
Virtues
Hazrat Abu Sa'eed Al Khudri (R) narrates that when the Banu Quraizah had agreed that Hazrat Sa'd bin Mu'az (R) shall decide regarding their fate (after the treachery in Khandaq), Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) sent for him. He arrived on a donkey. When he came close to the Masjid, Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said to the Ansar, “Stand up for your leader or the best of you.” (Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawood)
Hazrat Bara (R) narrates that Nabi r was gifted a silken cloth. The Sahabah (R) liked it especially due to its softness. Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “Do you all like it? Verily the handkerchiefs of Hazrat Sa'd bin Mu’az (R) in Jannah is better than this.” (Tirmizi)
Hazrat Anas bin Malik (R) narrates that when the Janazah of Hazrat Sa'd bin Mu'az (R) was picked up, the hypocrites said, “How light is his Janazah” … this information reached Nabi r. He r responded, “Verily the angels were carrying it.” (Tirmizi)
Demise: Zul Qa'dah 5 A.H. aged 37. he was buried in Jannatul Baqi. A group of Sahabah (R) narrate Hadith from him.
