Engaging ‘Az-Zahra’ Event Grows Mother & Daughter Bonds

On Saturday, 10 October 2026, the Daughters of the Ummah (DOU) group - a sister’s youth development wing of the Darul Ihsan Centre - hosted an exciting event titled ‘Az-Zahra, Blooms & Buds’.

The programme took place at Hartley Road Primary School, Overport, and saw an attendance of approximately 150 young Muslimaat; aged between 9-15; inclusive of their mothers.

The event opened with a beautiful Qir’at recitation of Surah Ahqaf, which aptly touches on the hardships of motherhood. A DOU presenter explained this in detail, both recognising the importance and honour of the role of a mother, as the programme was intended to nurture the bonds between them and their daughters. An emphasis was also placed on following the life of Faathima (RA), the beloved daughter of Nabi Muhammad (SAW).

While mothers were addressed by Dr. Bilquis Hoosen, general practitioner - who provided invaluable advice and tips pertaining to general women's health - the youth were led to a separate hall for a more pertinent talk.

This included advice on appreciating their parents in the same way they do their friends. They were encouraged to ponder and think about how much work and effort their mothers put into them as their daughters, and how the way they interact plays a huge role in their lives here, as well as in the next.

Practical and simple tips were then provided to young Muslimaat on ways to be affectionate and kind to their mothers. This also included ways to handle disagreements, with a strong focus on the Sunnah and ways to deal with emotions such as anger and irritation.

Upon reuniting the girls with their mothers, the exciting activity of cake decorating was underway. A professional pastry chef welcomed and introduced attendees to the fun task ahead, offering and explaining ways to decorate and be creative with the materials and tools provided.

The youth, alongside their mothers, thereafter spent time bonding with each other as they created delicate and beautiful designs, all the while interacting with the friendly DOU staff and other guests.

The event then closed with an encompassing and heartfelt Du’a.

A young attendee remarked, “I loved it. The sprinkles were the best part for me.”

One of the mothers said, “We really enjoyed it. The main advantage was the price point. I would love for more events like this.”

Another offered, “It was my first event with parents included. I really liked that the girls had a separate talk and we had a one-on-one with the speaker.”
