Saleh al-Jasser, Saudi Transport Minister, has said that the railway would, “enhance regional integration, support trade, and develop a sustainable land transport system between countries of the region.” As a testament to this vision, at the beginning of April this year, Turkiye, Jordan, and Syria signed a transport cooperation memorandum which aims to boost trade and improve connectivity within the region.
The original Hejaz Railway was ordered by Sultan Abdul Hamid II in 1900, but construction was halted by the First World War. The project aims to revive this railway operation, but as of this time, remains in the study and feasibility phase.
