Most recently on 25 June, the O.R. Tambo International Airport has added a direct flight between Johannesburg and Madrid, Spain. This marks Air Europa’s first route into sub-Saharan Africa, providing three flights a week. Through this partnership with Span, other destinations across Latin America and Europe will be easier accessible.
Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille said, “The launch of the route comes as the government continues to implement the Cabinet-endorsed Tourism Route Development Marketing Plan.”
In February 2026, direct flights were offered between Johannesburg and Nacala, northern Mozambique. In June 2026, a route between Johannesburg and Zanzibar was established.
By October 2026, regional carrier Airlink is expected to implement its Cape Town-Zanzibar and Cape Town-Mauritius services.
