Eastern Cape: New R1.7 Billion Bridge Underway

A part of the South African National Road Agency’s (SANRAL) N2 Wild Coast Project, It is expected to reduce travel between the two provinces by 1.5 to 3 hours.

The project experienced several delays since 2019 when it was announced, and its time of completion is to be expected in 2029. According to SANRAL, it will be the longest span cable-stayed suspension bridge in South Africa when completed.

Lwando Mahlasela, spokesperson for the state-owned road builder, said, “This single-span, cable-stayed bridge, spanning over half a kilometre, is a complex, yet entirely achievable engineering undertaking.

“The contract remains intact and binding, with sufficient budget allocated to continue the works. The primary challenges relate to cash flow and production constraints, resulting in slower progress.”
