Though the declaration was expected due to all election dates being made public holidays in the past, the announcement this week has finalised it. Concerns were raised regarding the disruption of matric examinations as many schools serve to be voting stations for the public. However, these issues were promptly discussed and addressed.

“The IEC replied that through consultation with the Department of Basic Education, there will be minimal disruptions to matriculants as the day will be designated as a public holiday.” Committee chairperson Mmusi Maimane said.
