With R11 billion to be invested in signalling and telecommunications, the remaining R2 billion will be spent on rehabilitating the Umlazi Corridor, which is KwaZulu-Natal’s busiest passenger rail. The project is expected to see completion in May 2031.
Thami Sithole, KwaZulu-Natal PRASA Regional Manager, stated, “If we are running about 10 trains with the signalling, we can double the number of trains.”
eThekwini Mayor, Cyril Xaba, also added the city’s longer-term plan to allow for a single ticket use across transportation modes such as trains, buses, and taxis.
He said, “The ticket will indicate that you moved from a feeder system into a train, from a train into the other mode, and so on.”
