Late 18th century mosque stands tall in old Jakarta

Langgar Tinggi; which was built in the late 18th century during a time when Arabian merchants settled in Pekojan, Indonesia; is one of the oldest mosques in Jakarta.

The mosque is nearly 200 years old, and to this day, still retains its original form. It was built by a Yemenese Muslim trader by the name Abubakar Shihab in 1828, on land that was donated by a prominent South Arabian merchant family.

The mosque is a mixture of architectural traditions, such as Portuguese, Chinese, and Javanese.

“Look at this building, from 1828 until now, it is still strong and intact… This mosque is still original and has not been changed since it was built. We don’t want it to be changed,” Achmad Alwi Assegaf – caretaker of Langgar Tinggi – said. “These were the blessings of the past generations… They built mosques, prayer rooms, and funded celebrations of Islamic holidays so the people in Pekojan observed them like in Yemen.”
